I first heard of Joe Grushecky when he came to our concert company DiCesare Engler Productions. We managed him for a short while. Joe had a Pittsburgh sound and wrote songs that reflected the steel city. He was from a town called Biddle a coal mining town near Irwin, Pennsylvania. He could relate to the working man and wrote songs to reflect that..
“Good Bye Steeltown”.
Joe’s American Babylon album was recorded in 1995 and was produced by Bruce.
When Joe was recording with the House Rocker’s, Steve Van Zandt got a copy of the album and gave it to Bruce. From that along with playing at a bar show and all the concerts that DiCesare Engler promoted with Bruce, Joe and Bruce developed a musical relationship. Bruce just liked Joe and his music. Liked him enough to team up with Joe to perform on these unique Pittsburgh concerts. I don’t think this happens anywhere else.
Last night 4/22/14, Bruce surprised everyone and announced at his Consol Energy Center concert that the tickets for the upcoming concert with Bruce and Joe would be going on sale the next day and the 2 shows sold out this morning within minutes.
Bruce lives in NJ, so Pittsburgh really isn’t that far. Within minutes he can fly in on his private jet with only 4 or 5 crewmembers. Bruce seems to have so much fun working at the small Pittsburgh venue and performs as though it was his first concert – jumping into the crowd.
“Man I love this place. Look at these flags.” Bruce said of the Soldiers and Sailors hall located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.
