George Harrison’s Rickenbacker guitar is heading for sale at an auction in New York.
The Julien’s Auctions sale is May 17 at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manhattan. The 1962 Rickenbacker 425 is estimated to bring up to $600,000.
George was the first Beatle to visit the US. He came in 1963, a year before the Ed Sullivan TV show and The First American Tour in 1964 with John, Paul and Ringo.
He came to visit his sister who lived in Illinois. While there he stopped in a music store where he saw The 1962 Rickenbacker 425.
George purchased the guitar in 1963 at Fenton’s Music store in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Some people tell me that he bought it between $250 to $400.
He had the guitar refinished from a Fireglo red to black to match John Lennon’s Rickenbacker. George painted it black in 1963. There’s photo of George playing it when it was red.
Grorge bought the Rickenbacker probably because John had a Rick. George was kind of excited about buying it and took it to John Lennon as soon as he got back to England. He thought John would love it but John thought the guitar was cheap and just laughed.
John had a 325 which is not for sale but is estimated to be worth in the millions, if Yoko was able to put it on the market. Some say it is insured for $20 million.
McCartney had a Golden Hofner Bass made specially for him, but he wouldn’t accept it and it went up for auction. Michael Brown, a great Paul Tribute artist, bid $20,000 but it went for $800,000 . The successful bidder couldn’t come up with the money. It is still available at Musicgrounds in Leeds, England. They have owned it for quite a few years. Paul never played it.
On a lot of shows, Ringo got a new drum set and would put it up for sale as a charity fundraiser afterwards.
The May 17 auction also has a “Beatles ‘65” album signed by John, Paul, George and Ringo. It could bring up to $300,000. Anything signed by The Beatles after 1964 will command a high price.
Jimi Hendrix’s Sears Silvertone electric guitar is also up for sale at the auction. Some think it might go for $100,000.
George had a Silvertone before he bought the Rick. It was auctioned off and sold for $5,000 in 1972.
Do you know of any John Lennon guitars that were sold or are available for sale?
